ABC coverage of my after-school care mapping
The ABC covered my work at the Sydney Policy Lab mapping the Australian shortage of after-school care places, online and during the national 7pm TV bulletin: “Nationwide shortage of outside school hours care leaves parents in work limbo.”
The interview took place at the start of June, predating the recent arrests that focused reporting on safety in services and the role of for-profit providers in the sector. It’s good to see outside school hours care getting the attention it deserves. It’s even better that some public commentators are asking—albeit tentatively—why we allow businesses to profit from government-subsidised education and care.
Everyone involved in the piece was fantastic, but it’s perhaps a sign of the ABC’s lack of resources that they elected to directly embed the rough map from my interactive analysis notebook in the online story rather than use the supplied data in their own format. When I get some time I’ll give the complete map and other graphics an better-fomatted online home alongside some explanatory notes.
This after-school work uses a similar approach to my April policy brief on access to subsidised holiday care.
